What is an illuminated sign?

This article was posted on 23 October 2018

Signs that include in their construction some form of lighting are more popularly known as “illuminated signs.” Lighting is generally desirable because it either makes the sign stand out among its competitors and be visible at night, or because it looks so attractive it’s memorable and hard to resist. Adding lighting to signage adds a new level of interest to them and means your branding and message are always visible.

Illuminated signs are usually custom made to each individual customers requirements, so you can have what you want, where you want (to a certain degree of course!). They are designed and built according to requirements and specification, and they are proportioned so as to fit perfectly in an allocated space. These spaces can be anything from inside your premises to outside. They can be formed in trays, mounted directly to a wall, hung on frames, the possibilities are endless.

Illuminated shop signs help to promote a shop’s brand and business. A general illuminated shop sign is commonplace on the high street nowadays. They can be seen fitting into the space that is available across the shop front where it does its job of promoting a companies brand, services or products around the clock.

Illuminated signs made for shop fronts are, in many cases, designed to be suitable for exterior conditions. Not all illuminated signs are exterior, some can be internally mounted to be visible from the outside, whilst others are designed specifically to be used internally only. When illuminated signs are specifically designed for outdoor purposes, the materials it’s made from have to be able to withstand weather elements. Durable plastics and metals are normally used to create the forms and shapes required. These materials are hard wearing and able to withstand UK weather.

There are a few different types of lighting that can be adopted for illuminated signs. You could consider traditional Neon lighting, Fluorescent tubes, Cold Cathode Neon and LED, which has become the most commonly employed means of lighting an exterior illuminated sign because of the benefits of lower power consumption and minimal energy wasted as heat. LED light sources are bright, they are energy efficient and safe. They are available in a wide range of colours and can be controlled to suit requirements. LEDs are incredibly versatile and really help to bring your sign to life.

When a lit up sign is seen in the company of non-illuminated signage, it is hard to argue or ignore the real impact and benefit that they bring to your business. It’s not just because they are brighter. The intelligent use of colour, contrast, tone and shadows can all contribute to a sign’s performance. Signs for shops primary goal is to promote business brands and to be recognisable from a great distance. Often, recognition is achieved long before the viewer is close enough to the sign to read it. We all know when we are close to a certain fast food chain when we see the iconic golden arches long before we see the façade.
